“I saw a really cool party in what Westerners might call “the middle of nowhere.” Great music was playing. People were dancing. Most anyone would have wanted to be invited. From the outside, you wouldn’t know that the attendees were in the midst of immense personal, physical, social, economic and political challenges. Somehow the facilitator had helped them reclaim the joy they were born with. You could see it on their faces. You could feel it in your heart.”
I received these kind words from a friend who saw a video of my recent work in South Sudan. If I had to write a book today, (and I write one in my head daily -:) I would probably call it “Reclaiming The Joy We were Born With.” I believe that there is a natural joy we’ re born with which we can reclaim. The joy of being alive – is inside every breath we take. And since we take 20.000 breaths a day, it means that we have that many opportunities to connect to the joy of being alive we were born with.
Why I’m so enamored with the joy-of-being-alive-inside-the-breath is that it’s nature’s anti-depressant. No matter what challenge you’re dealing with, the energy you bring to it can determine not only the results but also the quality of the process. I’ve seen many people who have had to deal with horrendous losses, and being able to bring a calm joy to the loss made the grieving process much more manageable if not pleasurable.
That’s why I feel so passionately about practicing self-healing, inner work & meditation. It gives you enough joyful energy to keep depression away, which for some can be lethal, myself included. Practicing breathing joy, compassion & ease on a daily basis is my chosen way of healing and partnering it with others is becoming my professional expertise. I can’t see today working on anything, or trying to resolve a conflict or an issue without first making sure that your energy is calm & joyful and you’re at ease.
